Why club mastering is different from streaming

Streaming platforms normalise playback to around -14 LUFS, so a loud master gets turned down. Club and DJ systems do not normalise — the track plays at whatever loudness you delivered. That makes loudness a real, competitive factor for club music in a way it no longer is for streaming.

This is why club and DJ-focused genres (techno, house, drum & bass, dubstep) are typically mastered louder than a streaming release of the same track.

How loud should a club master be?

A common target for club and DJ playback is around -9 to -8 LUFS integrated — noticeably louder than the -14 streaming reference. The exact number depends on genre and how much dynamic energy the track needs to keep. The goal is competitive loudness on a big system without sacrificing the punch that makes people move.

Hold true peak at -0.5 to -1 dBTP. For a lossless club WAV that will not be re-encoded, -0.5 dBTP is often fine; if the same master will also go to streaming, keep -1 dBTP.

Staying clean at high loudness

Loud does not have to mean crushed. The trick is controlled dynamics — a well-tuned limiter, sensible saturation for density, and a tight low end — rather than simply slamming the ceiling. Check mono, because club systems sum bass to mono, and phase issues that hide in stereo will collapse your low end on a big rig.
