What loudness should you target for Hip-Hop?

-9.0
LUFS Integrated Loudness

Hip-hop mastering centers on three elements: punchy kick, defined bass, and present vocals. Sub-bass frequencies need precise control โ€” too much and the master sounds muddy on small speakers; too little and it loses that chest-thumping impact. Many modern hip-hop masters land around -8 to -10 LUFS integrated.

Quantara Music's Hip-Hop preset sets tone, dynamics, stereo image and loudness for hip-hop production conventions, with a true-peak-safe ceiling at -1 dBTP. The result is a strong starting point for hip-hop releases that you can fine-tune by ear.

How loud to master hip-hop

Decide what the master is for. Club and DJ playback is usually not normalised, so loudness counts there. Streaming is: Spotify turns a -9 LUFS master down by about 5 dB to its -14 LUFS reference, so extra loudness buys nothing and costs punch.

Loud master, more headroom. Spotify recommends true peak below -1 dBTP, and below -2 dBTP for masters louder than -14 LUFS, because louder tracks distort more easily when encoded.

808s, kick and sub on small speakers

Phone and laptop speakers reproduce little of the deepest sub-bass, so an 808 that only lives below about 60 Hz disappears on them. Gentle saturation on the 808 adds upper harmonics that keep the note audible without adding sub level.

Let the kick and the 808 take turns: if they hit together, the limiter reacts to both and the whole track pumps. A small level dip in the 808 under the kick, or tighter 808 tails, keeps the low end clear.

Check the low end in mono: clubs and many phone speakers play bass in mono, and stereo bass can lose level when it is summed.

Keep the vocal in front

The vocal carries the song: after limiting, check that every word is still clear on small speakers and that the s and t sounds have not become harsh.

Compare against reference tracks at matched loudness, not at their natural level: a louder reference always sounds better at first, which hides real differences in tone and punch.

Platforms to check for Hip-Hop

Check the Hip-Hop master against the references of: Spotify, SoundCloud, Apple Music, YouTube. The -9.0 LUFS figure is a typical loudness for the genre and a sensible starting point for these platforms โ€” most of them normalise playback, so treat it as a reference rather than a number you must hit.

FAQ โ€” Hip-Hop mastering

Can I try Hip-Hop mastering before paying?

Yes โ€” master and preview in the studio; a free account includes 1 export with a watermark, no credit card. Exports without a watermark come with Pay Per Track, Pro or Studio. Unlimited exports are available on the Pro plan.

What loudness should I target for Hip-Hop?

Use -9.0 LUFS integrated as a reference and keep true peak under -1 dBTP; for streaming, Spotify recommends below -2 dBTP for masters louder than -14 LUFS. Master for the song first; most streaming platforms normalise playback, so the reference matters more than chasing a loud number.

What audio formats can I upload and export?

Upload WAV, FLAC or MP3 up to 500MB. Export WAV, FLAC or MP3, depending on your plan, normalised toward the Hip-Hop reference with true-peak-safe limiting.

How loud should a hip-hop master be?

For clubs and DJ use, many hip-hop masters land around -8 to -10 LUFS integrated. Streaming normalises playback (Spotify to -14 LUFS), so a louder master is turned down; if your master is louder than -14 LUFS, Spotify recommends true peak below -2 dBTP.

How do I make an 808 audible on phone speakers?

Phone speakers reproduce little deep sub-bass, so add gentle saturation to the 808: its upper harmonics carry the note on small speakers without raising the sub level.

Should the vocal or the beat lead in a hip-hop master?

The vocal. After limiting, every word should stay clear on small speakers; if the beat masks it, ease the competing range in the beat rather than pushing the whole master louder.
