What “muddy” actually means
A muddy mix is one where the low-mids — roughly 200 Hz to 500 Hz — carry more energy than the rest of the spectrum can support. Individual sounds stop being distinguishable, the vocal loses its edge, and the whole thing feels like it is playing through a blanket.
The reason this band causes trouble is that almost everything lives there. The fundamental of a male vocal, the body of a snare, the low end of a guitar, the upper harmonics of a bass, the left hand of a piano. Each one is fine alone. Stacked, they sum into a build-up that no single track appears responsible for.
It is worth separating muddiness from two things it gets confused with. Boominess sits lower, usually 60-120 Hz, and feels like uncontrolled weight. Boxiness sits slightly higher, around 400-800 Hz, and sounds like the mix is in a small room. The fix differs for each.
How to confirm it is really the low-mids
Before you cut anything, prove where the problem is. Guessing leads to over-correction, which is worse than the original issue.
Sweep with a narrow boost. Put a parametric EQ on the master bus, set a narrow band with about +6 dB, and sweep it slowly from 150 Hz to 800 Hz. The frequency where the mix suddenly sounds worst is your problem area. Then cut there — gently — instead of boosting.
High-pass everything that is not bass. Most instruments carry low-frequency energy they never need. A high-pass at 80-120 Hz on guitars, keys, vocals and overheads often clears more mud than any amount of EQ cutting.
Check in mono. Muddiness frequently comes from phase interaction between layered tracks. If the mix collapses in mono, you have a phase problem, not an EQ problem, and EQ will not fix it.
Fixing it in the mix, where it belongs
The honest answer is that muddiness is a mix problem. It is far easier to solve at the source than at the master.
Cut, do not boost. If the vocal is lost, cutting 300 Hz on the guitars usually works better than boosting 3 kHz on the vocal. Subtractive moves leave headroom; additive ones eat it.
Give each element its own band. Kick and bass are the classic conflict. Decide which owns the sub (usually the kick below 60 Hz) and carve the other one there.
Fewer layers. Three guitar tracks doubling the same part will always be muddier than one good take. Layering is often a substitute for a performance that did not quite land.
Watch the reverb. Reverb returns carry a lot of low-mid energy. High-passing the reverb send at 300-400 Hz clears space without losing the sense of depth.
What mastering can and cannot do
Mastering works on the finished stereo file, so it can shape the balance but cannot separate elements that are already fused together.
What it can do: a gentle broad cut of 1-2 dB around 250-350 Hz, which lifts the perceived clarity of the whole mix. Mid/side processing, which can reduce low-mid energy in the centre while leaving the sides intact — often effective, because mud tends to be a centre problem. A small presence lift around 2-4 kHz to restore definition.
What it cannot do: unmask a vocal that is buried, fix phase cancellation between layered tracks, or separate a kick and bass that occupy the same frequencies at the same time. If the elements are fused in the stereo file, they stay fused.
A useful rule: if a broad 2 dB cut fixes it, mastering can help. If it needs 6 dB, go back to the mix.
A note on AI-generated tracks
Tracks from Suno, Udio and Mureka show low-mid build-up more often than human mixes, and for a structural reason: they are generated as a finished stereo file rather than assembled from separated parts. There are no individual tracks to high-pass.
That makes the mastering-stage tools more important than usual, and it makes an adjustable chain more valuable than a fixed one — the amount of correction needed varies a lot between generations, even from the same prompt.
Mid/side is especially useful here. Reducing 250-400 Hz in the mid channel while leaving the sides alone often opens up an AI track without thinning it out.
